ASIAN RIVALS TO iPHONE
Rival Asian mobile OEMs response to the iPhone is explored in a June 29 New York Times article covering off the competitive movements of Asian mobile manufacturers and their initial lack of concern over the real threat of the iPhone. According to the Times, S. Korean manufacturers are taking the threat that Apple may repeat in mobile what it did in the MP3 space: change the rules of the game. By the end of the year, Samsung, will unveil the "Ultra Smart F700, with a touch pad sceen dsiplay, just like the iPhone. That's really when the debate should start.
China already has an iPhone clone. A Chinese company has apparently announced a new mobile
that looks very similar to the iPhone. The new phone called M8 -- which is said to be designed by Chinese firm Meizu -- features touch-screen functionality and boasts a smaller footprint than Apple's iPhone with an accompanying smaller screen, but offers a higher 720x480 resolution than Apple's 320x480 iPhone.
I'm struck that so little notice has been made of LG's Prada phone that was launched at 3GSM in Barcelona in March. I saw it there and it looks and acts just like an iPhone. Yet, the Times doesn't even mention "Prada" in the articel and instead refers to LG "has begun selling a smartphone in Italy that can view full-size Web pages." Odd exclusion, since anyone buying a US$500 phone, has surely heard of Prada.
Moreover, some say that the iPhone will change the price elasticity on how much US mobile consumers are willing to pay for a mobile handset. “In the past, U.S. consumers were unwilling to pay $300 for a phone,” said S. Jay Yim, vice president of overseas marketing at Pantech." Much of the reason why MOST Americans don't pay for expensive phones is that they are locked into contracts, and can't migrate the use of the phone from one network to the other, not because they aren't looking to secure more features at a higher cost. It isn't the intrinsic value equation surounding the phone, it's the structure of the mobile phone acquistion market that limits the upside. From where I sit, the iPhone is akin to a high end Mercedes.
I think Samsung's and Bird's (largest mobile manufacturer in China) will have a longer term effect in how mobile phones are engineered.
